Comox Valley Waldorf School Board

The Comox Valley Waldorf School operates through the Comox Valley Waldorf School Society (CVWSS) as a consensus-based governance body for all Comox Valley Waldorf School functions. Incorporated in July 2009 as a non-profit society, the Board has grown from four members to eight, representing faculty, administration, parents and the wider community . If you are interested in volunteering on the Board or its various Committees – the Comox Valley Waldorf School is always looking for individuals willing to offer their time, experience and talents.

To support the development of the individual through secure attachment, rhythm and opportunities for expression,
To support the development of healthy relationships through consistent guidance and community involvement, and
To support the development of conscience and potential through deeply engaging academic experience.

Guiding Principles
We hold the child within the ideals of goodness, beauty and truth.
We provide a holistic experience that integrates the three-fold nature of the human being (head, heart and hands), and follows the natural rhythms of the day, seasons and year.
We provide warm, natural, & alive spaces that envelop individuals on their journeys and nurture certainty, harmony and tranquility.

We value social responsibility and care for people and the natural world.
We embrace diversity and inclusiveness in our community and encourage opportunities for shared responsibility and meaningful involvement in the school.

Board Chair: Christine Farrell
Witnessing the passion and commitment of the faculty, the beautiful way in which the curriculum is taught and the heart, mind and hands are integrated, I have been inspired to do what I can to support the well-being of our school. I currently act as the Board Chair, the Chair of the Parent Group Executive, and a member of the HR committee at the Comox Valley Waldorf School. I work as a Certified Holistic Health Therapist and care for my four children, two of which attend Comox Valley Waldorf School.

Treasurer: John Milligan
John grew up in Port Hardy on North Vancouver Island and has lived in the Comox Valley for 5 years.  He has been happily married for 17 years and has three children at Comox Valley Waldorf School.  John  joined the board in 2015 as the Treasurer and chair of the finance committee.

Secretary: Marussia Nesling
Marussia’s family joined the Comox Valley Waldorf school in 2012 and in 2013 she joined the school board.  In 2015 she joined the school's administrative team and is now the Administrative Director. She has 2 children at Comox Valley Waldorf School and continues to do work on the Board and on the Promotional Committee.

Bobby Boyd: Director
Bobby has amazing memories of growing up as a local Comox Valley Denman Islander!  When researching school options for their older son they discovered Waldorf Education at the Comox Valley Waldorf School.  Bobby’s partner Amy was inspired to begin a second career as a Waldorf Educator and Bobby joined the Board to help with Marketing.   Bobby has been a volunteer with Comox Valley Waldorf School since 2011.  Bobby joins us this year as a Board Director and head of Building and Facilities Maintenance. Bobby is also very busy with his young family including his two sons who attend the Comox Valley Waldorf School and his wife Amy Wells who is the Class 5-6 teacher.  Bobby enjoys sharing his love for outdoor adventures from adaptive paddle boarding, adaptive snowboarding, yoga, running, camping, and growing their own food.

Lucie Hawesova: Director
Lucie has two children at Comox Valley Waldorf School and has been an active member of the HR Committee since she joined the school in 2015.

Rebecca Watkin: Director
Rebecca is a founding member of the Comox Valley Waldorf school and our Director of Education (Principal).  She joined the board as the faculty representative in 2015.

Jen Irwin: Director
Jen Irwin is the Middle Grades Teacher, Faculty Director and a Board Director.  She has been with the Comox Valley Waldorf School since 2011 and has two children who attend the school.

Georgia Pears: Director
Georgia is a lawyer, currently practicing through her sole proprietorship, Pears Legal.  Before moving to the Comox Valley, she worked in Vancouver for one of Canada's largest law firms in the areas of Business and Indigenous Law.  Georgia has a daughter in preschool at the Comox Valley Waldorf School. She is also a volunteer with the Comox Valley Hospice Society and is a trained end-of-life doula.

Committees

The following committees are seeking additional members:

Promotional Committee

Mandated by: Faculty and Board
Mission: To raise the profile of Comox Valley Waldorf School within the local community, adjacent area, the world and to build the enrollment of the school.
Committee Composition: Office administrator, representatives from faculty, board and parent body.  Additional members may request to join the committee or may be asked to join.
Chair or reporting individual: Marussia Nesling (Administrator and Board Director)
Current Members: Lucia Perez (Faculty), Tanis Gower (Parent) and Kelly Castonguay (Parent), Jen Irwin (Faculty), Melanie Bean (Parent)

If you have marketing experience and an interest in growing our school, please let us know.  We would love to add new members to our Promotional Committee.

Revenue Building Committee

Mandated by: Faculty and Board
Mission: To increase and diversify revenue streams and develop ongoing financial stable support for our school through donor fundraising drives, events and grants: to raise capital for special projects such as building and land acquisition; and to strive with innovation and enthusiasm to attract abundance to the school: abundant finances, abundant human connection, and abundant creativity.
Committee Composition: Board members, school administration members, and parents.  Other interested members are enthusiastically welcomed to attend meetings and may request to join the committee or may be asked to join.
Chair or reporting individual: Bobby Boyd (Board Director)
Current Members: Nathan Rothgeb (parent), Georgia Pears (parent)

If you have fundraising experience and an interest in helping the school raise funds, please let us know.  We would love to have you join this important committee.

Building & Maintenance Committee

Mandated by: Board
Mission: The committee has oversight responsibility for the security, good condition and proper operation of the physical facilities of Comox Valley Waldorf School
Committee Composition: Board Directors, administrator, building owners and parents.
Chair or reporting individual: Bobby Boyd (Board Director)
Current Members: Marussia Nesling (Administrator), Eric Alexandre (Hemlock Building Owner)

We are always looking for new members to join this committee.  If you have building and or gardening experience and want to help out, please let us know.
